Another thing sorted
I am happy to report that Room 9 and 10 have got another thing sorted since last times post - a manageable spelling programme. Some of the children are working on SNAP words, some are working through the Essential Word List and the remainder and learning different grammar and spelling 'rules.' We are three weeks in and it appears to be working well so far. Easy to manage, test and record result. However, sadly some of the children do not appear to be learning their spelling words at home. Spelling was something that a few parents had talked to me about so it is disappointing that so many aren't making the effort at home.
In the past, I have not sent spelling words home as I feel the children work hard enough at school and reading is the most important thing for them to do at home. Also, when teaching phonics (which we will have up and running between the whole junior team next term) there has not been a need to send words home to learn.
So I feel torn - pleased to have a spelling programme up and running for the children (and parents) who want them, but flummoxed at the amount of children who don't appear to be learning their words at home. To help, I will introduce new and exciting ways for the children to learn their words at home...this could be the warm up before our spelling test etc.
Lets see how this goes....
